I spent two weeks at St. David's working in the ICU with Claire Hafner, RD, LD, CNSC. St. David's provides care to a variety of patients, but the ICU specializes in neuro patients. During my time in the ICU, I provided nutrition assessments and created nutrition care plans for patients in ICU as well as some patients in IMC, rehab and NICU. I also attended the multidisciplinary rounds in the ICU and stayed up to date on my patients in order to provide better patient care. I enjoyed this rotation because I was able to learn more about how to provide nutrition support for neuro ICU patients, which I had not learned much about in my clinical rotation at Seton Hays.

What I Learned:

  • How to provide nutrition support for neuro ICU patients- the typical medical care plan and what formulas to use.

  • How to perform nutrition assessments and provide recommendations for nutrition support of NICU patients.

  • Reinforced knowledge of how to utilize the A.S.P.E.N. critical care guidelines.

  • Strengthened my ability to calculate energy/protein needs & provide recommendations and adjustments for enteral formulas and rates.
